JoyStuck III – The Walker is an interactive video installation. A gymnastics treadmill is placed in a semi-dark room facing a large video projection covering most of the wall. The video shows a still image from a busy shopping mall or street.
Once a participant starts walking on the treadmill, the video begins to move forward in slow motion. The viewer occupies the position of a subjective camera, walking down the crowded street. Walking faster increases the video’s speed — but not proportionally. The video always lags behind, and the viewer exhausts themselves trying to advance. If they slow down or stop, the video reverses to the beginning of the scene.
The video material is recorded from shopping malls and streets in each city where the installation is shown, making each iteration locally specific.
